It was just a really long weekend. Whenever we have company, it's usually from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. We were originally told they would be here until today and while we were looking forward to seeing them, that's just too darn long. And when one of the kids asked if they could do something and she said "We have time, we're here until Wednesday"... I almost lost it.
It was still nice to see them and we did get to do some fun stuff. We all went to the zoo, the kids and I went with the MIL to JoAnn's to browse, drool over new yarn and then buy some new drooled on yarn. But my favorite thing of the whole weekend was that they watched the kids and let us go on a date. That doesn't happen. Superman and I rarely get any time to go out alone since moving here. So, awesome time going to a movie with my love, but it's kind of sad that during a visit from people we've seen for maybe an hour since Christmas, that was my favorite thing.
I know y'all got a kick out of our tweets, but I really should've tamed my
I know everyone needs a vacation. (Heck, I'd love a vacation! I'm not talking our now normal vacation of going up north to see family for a weekend. I mean a real vacation. Beach. Swimming. Tanning. Relaxing.) It just seemed like a really bad time for a vacation for the in-laws. She has a bulging disc in her back that could rupture any time. I'm sure it wasn't good for her to sit in the car for an 8 hour drive. She was on a lot of pain medication and laying on their air mattress resting and/or napping quite a bit. Superman's Dad has Dementia. You can read about it through that link, but sometimes it's very much like having another kid around. There is no brain/mouth filter so whatever he thinks, he says. Memory and rationalization are leaving and it makes it very hard to have a conversation or answer the exact same question just once. It just made for a pretty exhausting long weekend.
The in-laws left this morning and we now have a day with Superman before he goes back to work tomorrow! They ended up leaving a day early due to a strategically planned conversation. You see, Superman NEVER gets time off. His paid time off builds up, but he was really sick towards the end of May and ended up using most of it then. He's actually working half a day from home this morning so he can enjoy the afternoon with us. But he ended up telling his parents that he hasn't had time off in a while without being sick and he hoped they didn't mind if we went ahead with some things we wanted to do as a family. That's when they decided they would leave this morning instead of tomorrow. So this afternoon we are taking the kids to see Monsters vs. Aliens! It's playing at a theater nearby that plays movies all day for $1.50! We can't wait!
This weekend has definitely influenced our thoughts about a tentative trip up in a couple weeks. Saturday the 18th, we will meet my parents half way and the kids will go back with them for a week. We were trying to plan a trip up the following weekend to get them and visit. It's such a hard decision right now. We've seen both sets of parents and a brother in the last few weeks. There are more people to see but sadly, we've already seen the ones we're closest to and it is very tempting right now to not go all the way up for a whole weekend to visit. Whole weekend = leaving Friday after Superman gets off work, getting there around 2:00am, spending all day Saturday seeing everyone we need to see and leaving for home Sunday. It's very exhausting and just the idea of how much of a whirlwind trip it is makes it very tempting to just not do it. But we're undecided now as the summer is dwindling away and after so many visits recently, we just very much want to relax.
Anyway. I'm back! I just hope I can think of stuff to talk about this week. I like to have a few posts ready to go a few days ahead so I don't have to worry if I can't think of anything and right now, I got nothin'. I'll post though, even if it's just to say hi!
Now I'm going to go enjoy my little family!

9 people love me:
Hi Hi Hi Hi!!!! So happy to have you back!!!!
I know what you mean... with in laws THERE they drive you crazy and when they're not there you start feeling guilty about it. Sad, but I have that problem with my own father. I can only tolerate like an hour max with him. I hope you have a good afternoon with your little family!!
wow, that would be a tiring weekend! glad they picked up on your hints and left today! and glad at the same time that you still got to visit with them.
and YAY for a date! just think... one of these days the kids will be old enought to stay at home by themselves!
"visiting" is exhausting...a necessary evil...
have fun with your peeps today!
I feel like vacations are like doing a total "tune up" on a car -- You need one about every 75,000 miles :)
Oh, and it is Tuesday the 7th in the month of July, in the year 2009. I hope that clears things up for you! (joking... just joking, in reference to your post title)
Sounds like ya'll have had a crazy last few weeks. You deserve a break. And, yes, regardless if they're family or not, our parents and in-laws still have the ability to drive us insane! :-)
Yay! Ace is back! I am so glad to hear from you!
Our in-laws must be related! Mine will phone us and ask to come down for a couple of days, then when they actually get here they announce that they are staying for a week OR SO...
I lose it every single time. After about the 4th day, we tell them that they need to go visit and stay with some of all the other family that they have here. Truth be told, NONE of the family can stand having to put up with them and their crap for very long!
All our family is local, so seeing them never means living with them - that would be really hard.
